What recipe management software does
A recipe is the unit of a food business. It decides what you buy, what the plate costs, what goes on the label, what the kitchen prepares on Thursday and what your shop can promise a customer with a nut allergy. Most businesses hold those answers in five places: a recipe book, a costing spreadsheet, a nutrition tool, a label template and a production sheet. Every change has to be made five times, and it never is.
Recipe management software replaces those five places with one. You build the recipe once, link each ingredient to a supplier price and a nutrition record, and everything else is calculated: cost per portion, gross profit at your selling price, energy and macronutrients per 100 g and per portion, the allergen list, the ingredient declaration for the label and the quantities to prep for a production run. When a supplier puts the price of butter up, every recipe that uses butter is re-costed, including the pastry that goes into the pie that goes into the meal deal.
Who it's for
- Restaurants and commercial kitchens that want menu costing they can trust and prep lists that scale with covers.
- Food producers and manufacturers who need compliant labels, batch production packs and bills of materials for every product.
- Meal prep and food e-commerce brands selling online, where nutrition, allergens and price have to be right on the product page as well as the pack.
- Recipe developers, nutritionists and dietitians producing costed, analysed recipes for clients.
- Franchises and multi-site groups that need one master recipe book and local pricing.
- Food startups, who can apply for free access while they get going.
Spreadsheets versus recipe software
A spreadsheet is the right first tool, and the costing method is the same either way. The problems start when recipes share components and prices move.
| Job | Spreadsheet | Recipee |
|---|---|---|
| A supplier price changes | Find and edit every sheet that uses the ingredient | Update the price once; every recipe re-costs |
| A sauce is used in twelve dishes | Twelve copies that drift apart | One master recipe, linked twelve times |
| Nutrition and allergens | A separate tool, re-entered by hand | Calculated from the same ingredients |
| Labels | Typed into a label template, easy to miss an allergen | Generated from the recipe, allergens emphasised |
| Production for 400 units | Multiply by hand, hope the yields are right | Scaled with yields and losses, prep lists printed |
| Who changed what | Unknown | Version history and change log |
Getting started
- Load your ingredients and prices. Import a CSV of your supplier price list, or add ingredients as you build recipes. Each ingredient links to a nutrition record.
- Build the recipes. Type them, paste them, or let the AI import read them from a document or photo. Masters first, then the products that use them.
- Set yields and portions. Cooking losses and portion sizes turn a batch into a cost per plate and nutrition per portion.
- Price and label. Apply your markup and VAT rules, check the margin, print the label.
- Plan production and sell. Build a production day from orders or forecasts, and push products to your shop.
Plans
Recipee is sold on monthly plans sized by account type, from a single kitchen to enterprise groups, with self-serve checkout and no long contract. New food businesses can apply for the free Food Startup Incubator tier. Setup, data migration and training are available as services when you want a hand. See pricing for the current plans.
